Off Cat Island you have the opportunity to explore another phenomenon peculiar to The Bahamas: circular depressions in the limestone basin nestled among the coral mounds. These White Holes, as they are known, serve as an oasis for solitary reef and schooling fish. Along the walls, sharks, barracuda and other large predators abound, looking for their next meal.
Named after Arthur Catt, a British pirate who was in league with Henry Morgan and Edward Teach (Blackbeard), Cat Island is fifty miles long. The island's rolling hills culminate at the highest point in the Bahamas, Mount Alvernia, at 206 feet above sea level. Cat Island offers world-class bonefishing and is one of the lesser known destinations of the Bahamas.
