Matava is a scuba diving resort on the south eastern island of Kadavu in Fiji. This boutique resort has 10 accommodations. They have both Oceanview and Honeymoon bures with lagoon or ocean views. Ocean view rooms either have 1 queen bed or 2 single beds. Honeymoon bures have a king bed. All Matava bures have a private bathroom with Eco solar powered lighting and hot water. Ceiling fans are available for the summer; the rest of the year one can easily just catch the trade winds. So, each bure has cool hard wood flooring, cathedral ceilings, and a long balcony. MadFish Dive Center is the onsite PADI 5 Star scuba diving shop. They have two custom built 23ft long boats; Dive Me and Below Me. The 4th largest barier reef is the Great Astrolab Barrier Reef. The reef is 65km long and the dive sites are 60-300ft deep. They may do a morning dive or two and then return to Matava for lunch. Manta Reef is one of the popular dive sites featuring a manta cleaning station, dogtooth tuna, 2 species of mackerel, canary yellow fang blennies, and Fijian bi-color fox face rabbit fish. So, on 3-tank dive trips they go out to great Astrolab Barrier Reef and may dive the Ono & Sola Atoll with a BBQ lunch on a secluded beach after the 2nd dive.
From June to October humpback whales migrate near Matava. A pod of pilot whales and dolphins also like to have their pictures taken out here year-round.
Breakfasts at Matava is continental buffet style with fresh tropical fruits. So, you can also order a hot breakfast such as French toast or eggs Benedict. Lunch may be international tacos, local fruits, European pasta salad, or an organic garden-fresh salad grown and prepared onsite. Dinner on the bure levu balcony includes the best cuts of meats and fresh seafood. Thai fish soup, yellow fin tuna sashimi, and coral trout are just a few of the local favorites. Moreover, even the cheesecake for desert is prepared with freshly picked lemons. As for activities, many people describe the snorkeling on the Matava house reef "mind blowing". You can also try ocean kayaking or surfing. Birding includes 4 species of birds endemic to the island. You can also hike up the hills, or visit the Bamboo Spa.
