Blackbird Caye Resort Diving

There are over 70 dive sites to choose from near Blackbird Caye Resort. So, from the onsite scuba diving center twenty dive sites are less than 35 minutes away. Furthermore, they typically do 3 boat charter dives a day or 2 guided snorkel excursions. There are also over 500 species of fish, 350 species of mollusk, and 65 species of stony coral out here. The famous 400ft deep Blue Hole is less than 60 minutes away straight east and experiencing it is included in your stay. Other well-known dive sites include Light House Reef and Elbow Reef to view large pelagics. You can also view large pelagics at Pelican Wall or visit a pod of dolphins in the middle of South Lagoon. More importantly, you have to comb Lindsey’s Back Porch or The Terrace for a glimpse of the rare white spotted toadfish.

Attractions and Activities

With a nearby air strip, you can fly right over to Blackbird Caye Resort or arrive by boat. Packages include 3 meals a day at the Blackbird Restaurant. They have complimentary paddle boards and Kayaks or you can just relax at the pool or rest in your hammock on the balcony. Birding is also popular here with over 75 species nesting, residing, or stopping by the nearby Crocs lagoon. The lagoon is also the place to see crocodiles and manatees with their young offspring. This is also a great place for weddings and group activities.

Upon your arrival, our representatives, Andrea and Bruce, will greet you at the airport with our company van. They will be in the international arrivals area holding a sign with our resort name on it. If you arrive early in the day, you will be taken Old Belize to relax. Old Belize has a beach, pool,restaurant, bar, shopping, and much, much more for you to enjoy during the time between our airport pickup and the time we board our private boat to the resort. Be sure to pack a bathing suit, sunscreen and a towel in your carryon if you’d like to enjoy the beach and pool. They will complete their rounds, return to pick you up and take you to meet our boat for transport to the island. Transfers to the island typically take approximately 1.5 hours.
Passports are required for travel to Belize. Visas are not required for U.S. citizens. A passport is required for all visitors to Belize. It should be valid for at least 3 months beyond the duration of the intended stay in the country.
The time zone in Belize is the same as U.S. Central Standard Time; however, Belize does not follow Daylight Saving’s time.
To ensure your vacation is the most comfortable while on a remote island, we suggest you pack light, and wear lightcolored clothing to help deter the bugs. The moment you step foot off the boat you will be on sand all the time, so a pair of flip flops is all you are going to need - no shoes required! • Your diver’s certification card (if applicable) VERY IMPORTANT • Mask, fins, snorkel – (you may rent from the main office; Please advise no later than 45 days prior to the trip) • Wet suit – (we rent standard short sleeve 3mm shorty wet suits. Please advise us no later than 45 days prior to the trip) • Personal small flashlight or the flashlight on your phone to help you find your cabana at night after leaving the restaurant. While all cabanas have their own lights there are none around the resort. • Reef-safe, waterproof sunscreen with a very high SPF • Polarized sunglasses • Bug spray with deet content of 25% or higher (e.g. Deep Woods Off) • Hat for sun protection on the boat or around the resort • Books or magazines to catch up on your reading • Raincoat in case of rain • Light jacket during the winter months to stay warm in between dives • Camera, batteries, film, memory cards, iPod if you want music in your cabana. There are no TV’s or alarm clocks in the cabana. • First-aid medications • Dramamine/seasick medicine • Personal toiletries • Prescription medications • Blow dryer (these are in the new beach villas) • Benadryl for allergies • Lip balm • Itching remedy • NOTE: If you choose to bring wine, there is a corkage fee. All other outside alcohol is prohibited. We try to keep a fully stocked bar.
There is a small gift shop at the resort with some basic toiletries, t-shirts and souvenirs for sale.
Climate is sub-tropical with temperatures ranging from the mid 80’s during the day to the low 70’s at night. Water temperature ranges from 75-83 degrees F. We recommend a full 3mm wetsuit during the winter and a shorty or skin suit during the summer. Please understand that Blackbird is not responsible for adverse weather conditions that may occur during your stay, and all activities are governed by such. Safety is our main priority, and we appreciate your understanding regarding conditions that are acts of God and beyond our control. Cold fronts & rain may occur, so layers and rain gear are recommended.
Free Wi-Fi is available at the resort but only at the office, restaurant or main bar/lounge. Guests must provide their own laptop or mobile device. There is no Wi-Fi availability in the cabanas. Due to our remote location, signal can be weak and intermittent.
Native foods are prepared by our chef and served in our unique palapa dining room. We grow our own organic produce on our mainland farm, sending fresh produce by boat to the resort weekly. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style. Dinner is served to you at your table with a choice of two entrees. Complimentary coffee, tea, and purified water are available all day and bottled water is also available for purchase. The Palapa Bar sits on the water’s edge, offering full bar service. Here you can enjoy cocktails, soft drinks, mix and mingle with new-found friends and share in your day’s adventures.
Belize uses 110-volt electricity, same as the US. Plugs are typically the 2-pronged flat type, so US travelers will not typically need a converter or adaptor. A generator powers electricity 24 hours per day at the resort. To conserve energy, electricity may be turned off while guests are out diving or snorkeling. Due to our remote location, power may be interrupted intermittently.
Gratuity is at your discretion, and most guests leave gratuity on their credit cards at the end of their stay. The central office sends half of the gratuity to the dive team and half to the island team (e.g. restaurant, bar, and behind the scenes team members). We are a cashless resort. If you wish to tip in cash, please bring exact change. If you wish to tip someone personally, who does something extraordinary, feel free to bring cash for that.
Due to the remoteness of the island, there is no cell phone service at Blackbird. All calls are WiFi based (e.g. WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.).
The monetary unit in Belize is the Belize dollar. The fixed rate of exchange is BZE $2:US $1. US dollars are accepted in most places; change is given in Belizean currency (US coins are not accepted). Visa and Mastercard are accepted at the resort and can be used to pay for your rental equipment, bar tab and hotel tax. Please advise your bank that charges will be made internationally shortly after your trip!
Blackbird Caye Resort is a member of the Chamber Access Program and the resort is home to the island’s only private airstrip.
Guests must be certified to dive. To dive the Blue Hole, guests must be Advanced Open Water certified. Otherwise, you may snorkel the rim only. The Blue Hole Day trip takes place on Tuesdays, weather-permitting and with a minimum of 6 guests.
If you wish to penetrate the compartments of the Wit, a Wreck Diver Certification is required. Basic Open Water works for diving the exterior.
